La Mesa approves city sponsorship for 'Mini Mesa Civic Lab' to teach students about local government

The La Mesa City Council voted April 28 to sponsor Mini Mesa Civic Lab, a proposed civic‑education event for fourth‑ through eighth‑graders to be held Oct. 17 at the community center.

Councilmember Suzuki introduced the council‑initiated item, describing a day‑long event modeled on Junior Achievement’s BizTown that would let students meet representatives from city departments (police, fire, public works, San Diego Community Power, Helix Water) and learn how local government works. The proposal included authorization for use of city facilities, staff planning and on‑site coordination, demonstrations and event staffing by La Mesa Police Department and Heartland Fire, and promotion through city communication channels.

Public commenter Dawn Toll praised the idea as a necessary supplement to civic education that can help students understand voting and local civic processes. Councilmembers asked staff about cost; staff characterized likely costs as de minimis. The council moved and approved the sponsorship with unanimous votes.

Next steps: Staff will coordinate event planning and outreach with schools and partner agencies.
