Rushwood students describe community service projects to Nordonia Hills board

Rushwood Elementary presented its student leadership group at the Nordonia Hills City School District board meeting on April 28, giving the board a summary of the year's community service and school activities, the principal said.

Miss Turner, introduced by a board member as Rushwood's new principal, praised the students and invited Renee Piper, the group's advisor, to describe the program. Piper said the leadership group includes about 20 third‑ and fourth‑graders who meet monthly and take on projects that support the school and community. Highlights included a pajama drive that raised more than $500 to buy new pajamas for children in foster care through Dawn's Early Light, holiday caroling at a nursing home, a participation project with Summit Soil and Water Conservation, and a student‑run “pajama jam” fundraising event.

Students on the dais answered board members' questions about their favorite activities: several named the Target shopping trip to buy pajamas and the environmental presentation from Summit Soil and Water Conservation as highlights. The board praised the group's service and encouraged continued leadership development.

The presentation was offered as a demonstration of student work and no board action was required.
