The Fayette County Board of Education on April 28 approved routine finance and personnel business and appointed Cynthia Ray to fill a vacant board seat.
The board voted to accept accounts payable for the period as presented (transcript reference: $868,000). The motion was moved and seconded and the board voted in favor; the chair declared the motion carried.
The board then approved personnel item 52-34 after a motion and second with no discussion. The transcript records the motion as moved by Dean Ryan (speaker 11) and seconded by another board member; the motion carried.
The board considered item 52-35, an appointment to fill the seat held by the late Coach Gary Ray. West Virginia Code 18-5-2 requires the board to fill a vacancy within 45 days, the president said. Three self-nominations were listed during the meeting: Marissa Messer, Cynthia Ray and Steven Slockett. A board member nominated Cynthia Ray, the nomination was seconded, nominations were closed and the board voted "Aye." The board appointed Cynthia (Cindy) Ray to the vacancy; she must complete orientation delivered by the West Virginia School Board Association before being seated, and the board expects to swear her in at its May 5 field meeting at Oak Hill High School.
The board set future meetings as follows: a May 5 field meeting at Oak Hill High School (4:30 p.m.), a regular meeting on May 19 at the board office (6 p.m.) and a special budget hearing with Ms. Ridley on May 20 at 10 a.m. The president accepted a motion to adjourn the special meeting.
No amendments or dissenting votes were recorded in the transcript for the items covered at the April 28 meeting.
