Needham disabilities commission votes to ask French Press to clear sidewalk access

Commissioners discussed a complaint that French Press’s outdoor seating narrows the public sidewalk adjacent to Town Hall and impedes passage for people using mobility devices. Tatiana described seeing a person in a wheelchair struggle to navigate the walkway and noted an awning and terrace layout that places tables in the pedestrian path.

Carol moved that the commission send a letter to French Press raising the sidewalk accessibility concern and asking the business to realign tables and chairs to preserve a clear path. Felix seconded the motion; commissioners completed a roll call and approved the motion. Maureen volunteered to draft outreach language and the group agreed the message should use the commission’s letterhead and a previously used template for downtown businesses.

The commission framed the action as an enforcement‑adjacent outreach: members noted that if a particular renovation were required under building or AAB rules, the building department could be involved, but the commission’s first step is a courtesy request to the business to improve circulation for people with mobility challenges.
