The Commission on Disabilities voted April 28 to allocate commission event funds to support a series of weekly social gatherings at the local VFW aimed at reducing veteran isolation. Kelly described the VFW’s plan for weekly Wednesday social events with picnic tables, hot dogs and outreach to the public; commissioners discussed sponsoring the first one to three gatherings using NCOD funds that must be spent by June 30.
Commission members confirmed availability of roughly $1,000 in the NCOD event budget (about $550 baseline plus an additional $500 request for a speaker or event costs) and agreed they could underwrite food and materials for the initial events. The first sessions were proposed for late June, during the town’s warm weather period; the events were described as open to veterans, nonmembers and the public.
The motion to approve use of commission funds for the VFW events was moved and seconded and passed on a roll call. Commissioners volunteered to help organize the first events and to coordinate with town services for picnic tables and logistics.
