Assembly adopts resolution mourning the death of former Congressman Elliott Engel

The Assembly on April 27 adopted a legislative resolution mourning the death of the Hon. Elliott Engel, who died April 10, 2026, and several members delivered personal remarks about his long record of public service.

Sponsor Mister Dinowitz introduced the resolution and recalled Engel's rise from public housing in the Bronx to a career in Congress, noting leadership roles including his chairmanship of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "He helped countless people in The Bronx, Westchester, and Rockland," Dinowitz said, and asked members to honor "the life of a good human being who led a life well lived."

Members across the chamber offered tributes. Mister Benedetto described Engel as a friend who ran tough campaigns and kept personal loyalties; Miss Poland recounted Engel's prompt constituent assistance in a family emergency; Mister Yeager and others praised Engel's dedication to public service and his work on foreign policy and human rights.

The resolution was adopted by voice vote. Members said Engel's responsiveness to constituents and decade-spanning public career merited formal recognition from the Assembly.
