Council narrows snow-and-ice law to require sidewalk clearance within 24 hours

The Norwalk City Council approved revisions to chapter 95 of the city code to clarify the time frame for snow-and-ice removal. The amendment sets a 24-hour requirement after the end of a weather event for private property owners and business owners to clear sidewalks.

Councilmember Wintersrand said the change mirrors language used by other municipalities and aims to make responsibilities clear so enforcement can be implemented fairly. She and other council members said the fee structure and fine enforcement procedures will be developed by Public Works and reviewed in a future committee.

Council members emphasized plans to consider supports for elderly and disabled residents when crafting enforcement rules.
