Commission subcommittees told the Human Relations Commission they plan a focused series of forums, beginning with labor issues affecting the immigrant community.
A subcommittee member said labor topics — vending, farmworker conditions and migrant labor — align with seasonal access to impacted voices and could be scheduled as a quarterly forum or completed within a month, depending on availability. "We think most likely legal needs within the community will be the second [topic]," the member said, noting the subcommittee will map subsequent topics at a later meeting.
Members also discussed pivoting the Cesar Chavez Day event toward a broader recognition of immigrants while preserving attention to local farmworkers. Options included using the farmer's market, holding events in an auditorium to increase attendance, and timing events in September or October; no date was set.
Commissioners noted the recent opening of a local migrant center this season and said that will inform outreach and scheduling for forums that seek direct input from those affected. Public commenters urged the commission to choose an active, upstream role that moves beyond staff sounding-board functions and to build plans that include resource mapping and an action plan.
The commission agreed to continue planning and to return with more details on format, budget and outreach.
