The Brian Head Town Council approved two construction contracts on March 24, awarding a $722,100 contract for shuttle stops and crosswalks and a $422,886 contract to renovate the town hall exterior.
Town Manager Bret Howser told the council the shuttle project bids came in at $722,100 against a $500,000 budget, with the largest cost drivers tied to ADA-compliant ramp designs. Council members discussed value-engineering options, including using a long continuous ramp instead of switchbacks to ease snow removal and substituting some concrete sidewalks for asphalt to reduce cost. Council Member Duane Nyen moved to award the shuttle contract to Larry H. Miller Building; Council Member Logan Cruz seconded. The motion passed, 5-0.
On the town hall exterior project, Howser said the low bid was $422,886 compared with an internal estimate of $200,000. Heated walkways were estimated at approximately $250,000 and stone materials about $38,000; the council chose to omit heated walkways, proceed with natural stone and traditional snow removal, and award the contract to Larry H. Miller Building. Council Member Larry Freeberg moved and Council Member Cruz seconded the motion; it passed, 5-0.
Both contract awards included discussion of maintenance practicality and trade-offs between ADA requirements and long-term upkeep. The council directed staff to manage modifications through change orders to avoid re-bidding delays.
The council recorded formal votes for both motions during the March 24 meeting; work timelines and contractor start dates were not specified in the meeting minutes.
