Kayaker rescued off Hampton Bays; smoking canister at Mile Hollow Beach taken for disposal

Two separate public-safety incidents on April 19 were reported on the program. Southampton Town's Marine Patrol rescued a kayaker stranded on a sandbar approximately 500 feet northeast of the canal near Hampton Bays after she called 911; officers pulled the woman aboard a marine patrol boat and the Hampton Bays volunteer ambulance corps treated her for hypothermia. A marine patrol officer who sustained a leg injury during the rescue was transported to a nearby hospital.

Earlier on the same day, the East Hampton Village Police Department received a 911 call reporting an unidentified gray canister emitting smoke on Mile Hollow Beach. The canister bore markings indicating it was flammable and combustible and had instructions to contact police or military if found. The East Hampton Fire Chiefs and the Coast Guard responded; the Coast Guard suggested the item was probably a flare used during a training exercise. Fire crews took the smoking canister for disposal and the village police department declared the case closed.

The broadcast provided location details and emergency response agencies involved; no criminal charges or further public-safety notices were announced on the program.
