Roundup: council approves road-salt purchase, schedules repairs and hears residents on storm damage

At its April 21 meeting, the Bedford Heights City Council approved Resolution 2026-029 to participate in the Ohio Department of Transportation cooperative purchasing program to buy sodium chloride for the 2026–27 winter season.

Mayor Stevens praised public-works crews for their winter response and said the salt purchase keeps the city prepared for the next storm. The resolution was adopted after a motion to suspend the rules and roll-call confirmation.

Councilman Tinker said the city will apply for a $200,000 supplemental community grant to repair Aurora Road after a lightly attended public hearing on April 14. Separately, council members said Meadow Lane pavement repairs are tentatively scheduled to start the week of May 4; the city will post project notices, install message boards and deliver door hangers to affected homes.

Council welcomed new member Ayanna Green and rescheduled the next full council meeting from May 5 to May 6 because of the primary election. The council also discussed renaming the Cable TV Committee to reflect expanded responsibilities including live streaming and website accessibility.

During the public-comment period, residents described extensive hail damage to homes and concerns about insurance replacement values. Resident Terry Hahn said his insurer listed a replacement value of more than $400,000 for his home, which he said would create a large out-of-pocket obligation if the insurer's numbers stand. Staff and council advised residents on contacting their insurers and said the city will seek state assistance for extensive storm damage if appropriate.

A resident, Stacy Guy, asked about the status of a tree-citation case; staff said the case is scheduled for court on May 5 and offered to follow up by phone.
