FCPS reports gains in algebra access and accepts Goal 4 strategic plan progress; board asks for subgroup data

The Fairfax County School Board accepted on April 23 a report on Strategic Plan Goal 4, which focuses on equitable access and opportunity. Superintendent Reed and academic staff presented data showing that last year 82% of graduating seniors successfully completed college-level coursework or earned CTE completer status, and staff reported that 98% of middle school students enrolled in algebra 1 in 2024–25 passed the course.

Doctor Reed and Dr. Presidio described strategies driving the gains: an algebra access network improvement community, improved data dashboards and course-advising practices, micro-credentialing for more than 200 staff to teach algebra, itinerant teachers, and use of home-language materials to support multilingual learners. Reed said enrollment in eighth-grade algebra rose 18 percentage points over three years, with notable gains among multilingual learners and students with disabilities.

Board members pressed staff on subgroup outcomes and implementation details. Commissioner (board member) Frisch and others highlighted the work's status as an Office for Civil Rights indicator and asked for disaggregated data (by subgroup and school). Dr. Presidio described an honors framework and explained that AP and IB are externally scored while honors use a division-developed honors framework. Staff said they would share additional SOL pass-rate data and further analyses of where gains are occurring.

The board voted to accept the report (vote read as 10-1). Members emphasized continuing focus on closing remaining gaps and the 2030 target to achieve broader access.
