Board tables resolution to terminate Talmadge Road land purchase

The Edison Township Board of Education voted to table a resolution that would have terminated the district's contract to purchase the Talmadge Road property, postponing final action to a future meeting.

Board member Miss Peng moved to table the resolution and Mr. Azzarello seconded. The chair called the roll; the motion carried on a 4–3 vote: Azzarello—yes; Ereko—yes; Ronak Patel—yes; Lugo—no; White—no; Peng—yes; Vishal Patel—no.

Board President (who presided) said that tabling the motion means the board cannot vote on abolishing the land purchase until a subsequent meeting. “So what does that mean is we cannot vote on the abolishing the land purchase? Because there was a motion to table, so we cannot vote it until the next future meetings,” the president said during the open session.

The resolution had been listed on the agenda as a measure authorizing termination of the contract for the purchase of the Talmadge Road property. The board had met in a confidential session earlier under NJSA 10:4-12 to discuss personnel, student matters, pending litigation, contracts and property acquisition before reconvening to take up the item in open session.

No substantive vote on the underlying termination occurred; the motion to table was procedural and delays a final decision. The Talmadge Road item will be placed on a future meeting agenda for further consideration.
