Authority approves resolution to match Minnesota funds 50/50

The Metro Flood Diversion Authority Finance Committee on April 22 unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the Authority to match 50 percent of funds received from the state of Minnesota on a 50/50 basis.

Executive Director Jason Benson described recent work with the Minnesota Legislature and testimony before the Senate Capital Investment Committee. Benson said staff are continuing lobbying efforts in Saint Paul, and that the Authority may seek to use up to $32 million in matching funds on a one‑to‑one basis with state dollars during the current legislative session depending on outcomes. "We've been challenged to get money out of their bonding bill," Benson said, while noting momentum and the potential for a large bonding bill in the Senate.

A committee member moved the resolution and the committee approved it by roll call. Benson said staff and local partners — including city and county elected officials and chambers of commerce — have been engaged in lobbying efforts and will continue to pursue opportunities to secure state contributions to match federal and local funds.

Next steps: staff will continue meetings with legislators and report outcomes and any formal requests for Authority matching funds to the committee.
