Vienna authorizes mayor to spend up to $25,000 at McGuffey Tents auction to buy event equipment

Vienna’s council approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to expend up to $25,000 to purchase goods and equipment at the McGuffey Tents liquidation auction, the mayor said, explaining the move aims to secure tents, chairs and other items the city regularly rents for events.

Councilors said McGuffey Tents is going out of business and the city’s nearest rental alternatives are in Columbus, Cincinnati and Huntington, which can be significantly more expensive. The mayor said that with newly organized storage space in public works and parks facilities, purchased equipment could be stored and maintained for recurring city events.

The mayor framed the $25,000 cap as consistent with the city’s purchasing policy that permits mayoral purchases up to that amount without a formal bidding process; purchases above $25,000 would require bids. Council members asked practical questions about storage conditions and maintenance; staff said they had identified dry, clean space and would be responsible for upkeep.

Council approved the resolution by recorded vote and described the authorization as limited to needed items to support city events, not an open-ended purchasing program. The clerk recorded the motion as passing and the resolution as adopted.
