The council unanimously approved on first reading an ordinance amending the town’s solid‑waste contract with Republic Services.
Republic proposed several changes to the current agreement: a modest household rate increase from $16.05 to $18.72 beginning Oct. 1, 2026 (with a 5% annual escalator after Oct. 1, 2027), a reduction in contractor‑observed holidays from six to three (New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas), an increased annual contribution to the town customer‑relations fund (to about $106,000 with a 5% escalator), an increase in the senior discount from $1.50 to $2.00 per month and updated sludge transport/disposal rates. The contract amendment also adds a twice‑annual green‑waste collection program that diverts yard debris to a mulch facility rather than landfill and replaces bulk pickups during those program windows.
Republic representatives said costs for service and disposal have risen and that the company remains committed to community outreach and resident‑facing services; council members commended Republic for its local engagements, including event sponsorship and community programs. The ordinance passed on a unanimous vote.
