Volunteer urges softer fruit, dessert options at Carlsbad senior center

At the April 23 meeting of the Carlsbad Senior Commission, volunteer Barbara Siegel urged staff to adjust the senior-center menu to include softer fruit and occasional treats so diners who have difficulty chewing can enjoy meals without wasting food.

"My name is Barbara Siegel. I live on Refugio here in Carlsbad," Siegel said, describing work she does serving meals and recounting that she often clears away uneaten portions such as large amounts of brown rice. She suggested alternatives such as applesauce or jello and acknowledged dietary restrictions around pits in fresh cherries, peaches and nectarines.

The comment highlighted two points: an accessibility concern for seniors with chewing or swallowing difficulties, and staff awareness of food waste in congregate meals. "We appreciate your observations," the chair responded, noting the commission had discussed softer fruit at a previous meeting and inviting Siegel to continue submitting feedback.

Staff later described a new daily feedback form posted in the lunchroom to capture meal- and service-related comments in addition to the commission's annual survey. The form is intended to give volunteers and patrons a direct, trackable way to report issues or suggestions.

The commission took no formal action during the public-comment period; staff said they welcome continued input and that menu items and contributions are reviewed through established feedback and survey processes.
