Athens weekly update: summer events, alumni weekend, move-out donations and youth sports sign-ups

During the weekly update the hosts highlighted a series of community and recreation items for residents and students. Kyle Johansen summarized local sports schedules and promotions, including softball doubleheaders and baseball alumni weekend with a Sunday 1 p.m. game and free team T-shirts for fans and students.

Kyle also listed a range of summer events — including Boogie on the Bricks on College Street (June 13), Bookout to Breaks, Juneteenth and fireworks — and encouraged attendance. The mayor urged donations during spring campus move-out and listed collection sites: the Southeast Ohio History Center, Passion Works, the Athens Depot, Christ Lutheran Church and Ohio University Lot 40.

On recreation hiring and youth sports, the mayor said the city needs paid soccer officials (shifts Mon–Thu 5:30–6:30 p.m.) and provided a contact email (athensapr@ci.athens.oh.us). Youth baseball sign-ups run through June 15 with practices through mid-June and games July 6–Aug 6 for T-ball (ages 5–6) and coach pitch (ages 7–9) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These announcements were presented as informational items; no formal funding decisions or program changes were announced on air.
