Senator Salmon told the chamber the Senate’s capital proposal centers on deferred maintenance after several thin budgets left needs ‘‘compounding and stockpiling’’ across state facilities. He said the Senate included roughly $53–54 million for K–12 maintenance on its side of the capital bill and set aside funds for university and judiciary repairs.
Mount Edgecumbe High School was highlighted as a site needing significant work: Salmon cited a dining-hall project and window replacement among priorities and said some items (furniture, washers, small equipment) can be completed quickly to help restore full student enrollment.
Senators said the capital proposal aims to follow internal lists compiled by the Department of Education, the university and the courts in setting priorities. They acknowledged state resources are limited and that some community needs may remain unaddressed this year.
What happens next: the capital proposal remains part of the overall budget negotiation between the Senate and House as both chambers assemble final capital-budgets.
