Board backs letter asking state to study utility readiness for bus electrification

The Hendrick Hudson Board of Education voted April 21 to authorize a letter of support for the Lower Hudson Education Coalition’s petition to the New York State Public Service Commission asking for additional study of electric utility readiness to support school‑bus electrification.

Superintendent Tremblay explained the coalition’s petition asks the PSC for a pause in implementation timelines to allow districts and utilities more time to assess whether the local electrical infrastructure can reliably serve electrified bus fleets, including field trips and other energy demands. She said the request reflects concerns about ensuring adequate charging capacity and funding before full fleet deployment.

The board discussed the district’s commitment to environmental improvements and air‑quality goals while stressing the need for ‘‘a little more funding, a little more research, a little more preparing’’ before large‑scale rollout, according to board remarks. President Silverman said, if approved, she and the superintendent would sign the letter on behalf of the board.

The motion to approve the letter carried; district staff said the action is intended to amplify a regional coalition’s voice to state regulators and to seek more planning time and support to ensure safe, functional electrification for school transportation.
