Commissioners debate wage increases as county faces tight budget and significant maintenance costs

Commissioners debated whether to proceed with wage increases after staff recommended raising budget certifications to create the capacity for potential raises.

One commissioner said, “I would love to give everybody countywide a wage increase, ... but I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do,” noting tight budget projections, outstanding capital needs and insurance increases. Other commissioners urged caution: waiting until after second quarter financials and looking for savings before committing to recurring raises to avoid later cuts or layoffs.

Discussion also highlighted large, near-term capital needs — including a $148,323 estimate for replacement of rotted VAV reheat valves at the Juvenile Detention Center and other aging-building repairs — as reasons to preserve contingency funds. The board did not adopt wage increases at the meeting; members agreed to revisit the issue after additional fiscal review.
