Audit committee amends plan to review alternative learning centers

The Audit Committee voted on April 23 to amend its audit plan to examine alternative learning centers rather than the previously planned audit of nontraditional students.

Staff said the district had explored a partnership with Coastal Plains Charter High School but the board’s approval of the REACH charter shifted the district’s priorities. As a result, staff proposed an audit focusing on existing alternative learning sites to provide baseline information on instructional strategies, needs and opportunities for improvement.

Staff described the audit scope as inclusive — covering academic, operational and leadership elements — and said the review would examine Wings Elementary and Building Bridges Middle and Building Bridges High School with the goal of identifying areas to help transition programs into potential schools.

A committee member asked whether the review would include academic measures; staff confirmed it would. The Chair moved to amend the audit plan and recorded the motion as passed: “Audit plan is amended.” The audit staff said they will adjust monitoring and reporting to reflect the change and provide updates to the committee in future meetings.

The amendment places emphasis on instructional quality and operational readiness at the district’s alternative learning sites and aims to give the board a clearer baseline for any future decisions about program structure.
