Commission unanimously recommends rezoning at 5800 Mitchell Road to create two lots

The Sandy Springs Planning Commission on April 22 unanimously recommended approval of a rezoning for 5800 Mitchell Road that would rezone approximately 1.3 acres from RE1 to RD18 to allow the creation of two RD-18 lots.

Planner Laquita Williams outlined the request, noting the site includes a single-story ranch home, a pool and approximately 1.3 acres across two tax parcels; staff recommended approval with conditions that cap the subdivision at two residential lots and require the property owner to comply with planned city projects and dedicate any required rights-of-way or easements as part of the plat.

Applicant Chris Protos, representing the property owner, said the home is aging and the proposal would provide modest infill appropriate for young families; he said his team had done neighborhood outreach and would submit letters of support. Commissioners asked about frontage, access and compliance with code; Commissioner Leeds moved to recommend approval with staff conditions, the motion was seconded, and the commission recorded unanimous support for the recommendation.

The recommendation will move to the mayor and city council; staff will ensure that required right-of-way dedications and coordination with planned city projects are included on any future plat and in the permitting process.
