Beaver Area School Board approves stadium handrails; narrowly approves gym window treatment

Beaver Area School District board members on Sept. 16 approved two facilities contracts: Metro Fence will install handrails in three aisles at Gypsy Glen Stadium for $9,600, and Supertint will install window treatments in the high school gymnasium for $11,976.

The handrail contract was approved unanimously after the board determined the lowest bidder was nonresponsive and selected Metro Fence as the lowest responsible bidder. The motion to award the contract was moved by Mr. Matthews and seconded by Mr. Woodske and carried without objection.

The vote on the gym window treatment was closer. The board voted 7in favor and 2against; Mr. Bovalino and Mr. Woodske recorded the two no votes. The board did not provide additional detail in the meeting minutes about the specific grounds for the two dissenting votes beyond the recorded vote.

Board members framed the handrail decision as a safety and access improvement for the stadium; the window-treatment work was described in the agenda as installation at the high school gymnasium to address lighting or glare concerns. The minutes record the contract amounts and the procurement determination that the lowest bidder for the handrails was nonresponsive.
