Trustees and staff discussed progress and community impacts of the Safe Routes to School sidewalk project at the April 17 meeting, raising safety and service concerns even as contractors move toward early concrete pours.
Staff said excavation and footing work are already in place on several streets and that the contractor planned a first concrete pour on Panama Street the following day. "The original schedule they gave us was to be done by June 1," a staff member said, but added the contractor is making good progress and indicated some segments may finish sooner.
Trustees asked whether excavation work was creating unsafe conditions, noting that trucks loading near excavations had swung into oncoming traffic without flaggers in place. Staff said the contractor is responsible for traffic control and that they would remind the on-site engineer to enforce traffic-safety measures.
Board members also flagged practical impacts to residents: construction has interfered with garbage pickup in some blocks and trustees encouraged residents to contact village staff if collection was missed so the village can coordinate with the hauler.
On warranty questions, staff said sidewalk and road work carry a 12-month warranty; the village withholds 10% from the contractor until the warranty period expires, at which point the contractor’s retained amount is released.
Staff and trustees agreed to monitor progress and safety conditions during the active work and to return to the board with any outstanding service or safety complaints.
