A bill to coordinate state and local security planning for major international sporting events cleared the Assembly Arts, Entertainment, Sports and Tourism Committee on a unanimous committee vote.
The bill’s presenter (introduced by the chair as Assemblymember Gabriel) told the committee AB 2492 would "establish a framework for interagency coordination, ensuring that state and local agencies, as well as host committees, are aligned in their efforts to provide the highest level of security" for upcoming high‑profile events including the 2027 Super Bowl and the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Amelia Simone, director of government affairs and public policy for the California Travel Association, testified in support and said California’s brand and economy stand to gain from well‑executed events while personal‑safety concerns make coordination essential. "It’s critical that with the world's eyes on California, we ensure the safety and security of our visitors, workers, and residents," Simone said.
Committee members praised the bill’s expansion to include watch‑party sites and other community events tied to big games. The bill was moved (recorded movers included Mr. Gonzales with a recorded second by Ms. Quirk Silva) and passed to the Assembly Committee on Appropriations; the chair recorded the initial tally then the final roll call reported the measure out of committee 9‑0.
The presenter said the bill will position California to coordinate security and to work with federal partners and local agencies as event preparations continue.
