District reports low kindergarten turnout; staff childcare pilot underway

Superintendent Kimberly told the board the spring roundup produced a lower kindergarten yield this year — 73 students at the end of roundup compared with 104 the previous year — and that area superintendents reported similar enrollment patterns locally.

"This year, at the end of roundup, we're at 73," Kimberly said, describing the turnout as concerning and noting that enrollment drives funding and opportunities for the district. Board members suggested a canceled preschool screening event and delayed promotion may account for some late enrollments; Kimberly said she would double-check the screening schedule and follow up with the board.

Separately, staff provided an update on "Brewing Beginnings," the district’s employee-based childcare pilot. Staff member S9 said they have identified interest among employees, held informational meetings and expect Stacy Batten to serve as lead teacher in the space. The program team has met with the family social service administrator to determine regulatory requirements and is exploring potential Community Foundation grants and eligibility for the governor-announced return of CCDF (Child Care Development Fund) vouchers to subsidize care for qualifying employees.

The board did not take action on either item; staff will return with any new enrollment updates and further details about childcare regulation and funding as they become available.
