Chair: Attorney general declined to charge officer in September fatal shooting

The chair announced that the state attorney general eclined to bring charges against a Dorchester County law enforcement officer involved in a fatal shooting in September, saying the attorney generalound no policy violations in the case.

"A very thorough investigation was completed on this one in particular, and it was determined that there was no policy violations involved," the chair said, reporting the attorney generallected not to bring charges. The chair added officers attempted resuscitation immediately and the person later died at a medical facility.

The chair described the incident as a "justifiable shooting," said officers had tried to revive the individual "almost as soon as the individual hit the ground," and asked members to pass the word to law enforcement partners. The chair also noted the officer involved had previously accompanied the chair on a ride-along.

Members and law enforcement partners discussed recent interactions with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with an agency official saying the department had no substantive interaction with ICE beyond a recent vehicle accident handled by local officers. The official said another case will be brought before the board next week.

The chair encouraged board members to participate in ride-alongs with local agencies to better understand officers' day-to-day responsibilities across Dorchester County.

Following the updates, the board voted to adjourn into closed session to discuss a separate complaint and obtain legal advice.
