Birmingham City Council marks National Library Week, honors students and approves appointments

The Birmingham City Council recognized National Library Week and used the April 21 session to honor library staff and student accomplishments before approving routine business, including appointments.

Mayor (who read the proclamation) and Janine Langston, executive director of the Birmingham Public Library System, highlighted the library system's 140-year history and the North Birmingham Regional Library 's centennial. Langston said libraries "spark creativity" and provide spaces "where everyone is welcome," and urged residents to "find your joy" at library branches during National Library Week (April 19–25).

President Pro Tem Latonya Tate presented resolutions honoring two student groups: Southampton K–8's STEM team, the "Storm Sentinels," was recognized as a national finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition and credited with securing $50,000 in technology for their school; Jackson-Olin High School's boys relay teams were recognized for regional and national rankings and a cited fastest time of 3:17.54. Coaches, principals and administrators accepted council praise for the students and staff.

On routine business the council approved the consent agenda by motion and voice vote after a clerical amendment to item 5. Council reappointed Joe Ayers to the Downtown Redevelopment Authority (item 22) and appointed two members to the Industrial Development Board (item 23); the clerk and council announced those items passed.

Council concluded with district updates, neighborhood meeting notices and public speakers on separate issues including sewer repairs and traffic-calming requests; the meeting adjourned at the end of the session.
