Mayor Victor D. Trevino opened the meeting with a series of recognitions celebrating local accomplishments, presenting certificates and inviting recipients for pictures.
The council and mayor recognized Kimberly Gonzalez — noted for regional powerlifting achievements — and members of the JW Nixon High School girls soccer team for winning the program’s first district championship. Coaches, parents and administrators accepted the honors and thanked the city for the acknowledgment.
United High School’s dance and pom teams were commended for national titles, and Scripps regional spelling‑bee winners Hannah Chavez (champion), Caleb Garcia (finalist) and Maya Jimenez (third place) were congratulated and invited to speak briefly about representing Laredo.
Council members and school officials emphasized student dedication and the role of coaches, families and school staff in the successes. The recognitions concluded with group photographs and brief remarks from honorees and coaches.
The ceremony prefaced the regular council agenda, which began after roll call.
