Laredo council renames downtown archway the “Laredo Farm Workers Walkway”

The City of Laredo City Council voted to rename a downtown archway the “Laredo Farm Workers Walkway,” a measure the mayor brought forward after public presentations from the Alliance and longtime advocates.

Justice Danny Valdez and other Alliance representatives described multi‑decade organizing to recognize farm workers’ labor and history in Laredo. Valdez urged the council to memorialize that history for downtown visitors and residents.

The mayor moved the renaming, a council member seconded it, and the motion passed on an affirmative vote. Speakers said the renaming expands recognition beyond a single individual to the broader farm‑worker community.

Council noted the name will be used for the archway and at related downtown sites; city staff will follow up on signage and administrative steps to implement the renaming.
