Duchesne County adopts updated fire protection ordinance

The Duchesne County Commission unanimously adopted Ordinance 26-431 on April 13, 2026, updating Title 3, Chapter 3 of the Duchesne County Code to clarify rules and penalties for fire protection.

Deputy County Attorney Grant Charles explained the amendments during a public hearing, saying the changes remove dated citations and align county language with current state code. Charles also clarified permitted uses for burn barrels, noting they are allowed for weeds and debris but not for trash, garbage or rubbish. No members of the public spoke during the hearing.

Commissioner Tracy Killian moved to adopt the ordinance in regular session; Commissioner Jeff Chugg seconded the motion. Commissioners Killian, Chugg and Greg Miles voted aye and the ordinance passed. The ordinance adopts updated language to streamline enforcement and remove references that were not being followed in practice.

The action follows a review of county code to ensure consistency with state law, and county officials said the update is intended to make enforcement and compliance clearer for residents and staff. The county did not record any public opposition at the hearing. The ordinance becomes part of the Duchesne County Code as adopted, and county staff will provide the updated text for public reference.
