The Ulster County Ways and Means Committee on April 16 approved a three‑year lease agreement with 601 Road 28 Realty LLC to provide temporary indoor storage for the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.
Legislators asked why the county was committing to three years if it intends to build a permanent garage. County staff said the sheriff’s prior storage facility has been sold and the sheriff needs secure, indoor space immediately; staff also said the lease includes a convenience/termination clause that allows the county to end the lease when it completes a county storage facility. "He has been removed from the existing storage facility now, so he does need a space now," staff said.
Some legislators expressed concern about approving a multi‑year lease when permanent options are being considered; others noted protecting county vehicles and equipment is prudent stewardship. The committee asked staff to return to the next session with clarifying details, including the intended build timeline for a county storage facility and any termination language in the lease.
The committee voted to approve the lease with requested follow‑up answers to be delivered by the next session.
