Senate Judiciary forwards Grace Salazar’s nomination to joint session

Grace Salazar appeared by phone April 17 before the Senate Judiciary Committee and described roughly 30 years of state service as she seeks confirmation as a commissioner to the Alaska State Commission on Human Rights.

"My name is Grace Salazar, and I'm honored to be considered for appointment as a commissioner to the State Human Rights Commission," Salazar said, citing work with the Regulatory Commission of Alaska, the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, the Department of Natural Resources and the State Ombudsman’s office. She told the committee she retired from state service in April 2022 and began serving on the commission in October after the governor appointed her, pending legislative confirmation.

Chair Senator Klayman opened public testimony on the nomination and recorded no in-room or online speakers. Vice Chair Senator Keel moved that the committee forward Salazar’s name to a joint session for consideration; with no objections, Klayman ordered the name forwarded.

The committee took no roll-call vote on the floor of the hearing. The committee will forward Salazar’s nomination for consideration at the joint session, as is standard practice for legislative confirmations.
