Rep. Kai Holland highlights manufacturing as key to South Anchorage job growth

Representative Kai Holland (House District 9) opened the event by highlighting manufacturing as a priority for local economic development. Holland said he returned to Alaska 25 years ago and has spent much of his time supporting programs to help manufacturers become globally competitive. "I've come to have a deep appreciation and put a high priority on manufacturing as an area of economic development for our state," Holland said.

Holland described manufacturing’s job diversity—creating shop-floor work as well as positions in accounting, marketing and engineering—and used a local example to illustrate capacity: a Palmer manufacturer that a Fortune 150 company acquired but later kept and expanded in Palmer because the local operation was "world class." He said such examples show Alaska manufacturers can compete for production that might otherwise relocate outside the state.

Holland also promoted networking resources for local entrepreneurs and manufacturers, recommending the Alaska Manufacturing Association as a group that connects product creators with firms that have equipment and know-how. He suggested legislators and attendees consider supporting opportunities that help Alaskan manufacturers scale and participate in export markets.

The representative then introduced a session on wild ice skating and turned the program to Tim, who introduced the main speaker, Paxton Welber.
