Committee advances bill expanding appointments to Tennessee Education Law Enforcement board

The House Government Operations Committee on April 15 voted to advance HB2080, a bill that increases the Tennessee Education Law Enforcement Corporation board from seven to nine members and changes appointment authority to split nominations among the governor, the speaker of the House and the lieutenant governor.

Sponsor language presented by the bill’s author said the amendment would make the board consist of three directors appointed by the governor, three appointed by the speaker of the House and three appointed by the lieutenant governor, and requires appointments to “ensure diversity, professional expertise, geography, and demographic representation consistent with the mission of the corporation.”

Committee members asked no substantive questions during the presentation. The chairman called the roll for the voice vote and the clerk reported 14 ayes and 1 nay. The bill was forwarded to the Finance, Ways and Means Committee with a positive recommendation.

HB2080’s change shifts the board’s selection process away from the current all‑governor appointment model and imposes explicit representational requirements on new appointees. Supporters said the change will broaden decision‑making and ensure a range of professional and geographic perspectives; no opposition speakers were recorded during the committee’s consideration.

The committee moved on to the next agenda item after the vote. No effective date or additional implementation details were included in the committee record; further action will occur in Finance, Ways and Means.
