District staff outlines AP/weighting differences between Sage Creek and Carlsbad High; board agrees to clarify AR 5.121

District staff presented an informational review of current grade‑weighting practices and how scheduling differences between Carlsbad High School and Sage Creek High School affect GPA calculations and college admissions. Staff explained that because Sage Creek uses a trimester calendar and adds a locally administered third‑trimester seminar (not UC‑approved), apparent weighting differences can occur even when core AP and honors courses are treated consistently.

Presenters emphasized that UC and other universities use consistent conversion formulas (UC explicitly weights approved courses in grades 10–12) and that local practice should be transparent. Staff recommended clarifying the district’s administrative regulation AR 5.121 to remove outdated wording and to form an ad hoc committee to review which college classes and concurrent enrollment courses could be considered for weighting going forward.

A Sage Creek parent (Julie Kremri) said the district should comply with AR 5.121 and provided transcript examples that appear to omit the third trimester of AP courses from weighting. Trustees asked staff to clarify the AR, the trimester equivalencies and whether college courses should receive weight; staff acknowledged inconsistency in the AR language and recommended committee work and clearer communication in the parent portal (Aeries) and course catalogs.

Trustees agreed to pursue clarifying the administrative regulation and communicate updates to families to reduce confusion about which courses are weighted on transcripts and how trimester schedules translate to semester/UC calculations.
