Board approves office‑staff contract and authorizes legal retainer; approves personnel items and retirement recognitions

At the April 14 meeting the Carmel Central School District Board voted on multiple formal actions.

Office Staff Association contract: The board considered and approved a memorandum of agreement with the Carmel Office Staff Association covering July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028. Trustee Curzio explained concerns with language on summer Fridays, added vacation days and overtime triggers; other trustees urged recognition of the unit’s prior concessions. The board conducted a roll‑call vote: Vice President Curzio voted No; Trustees Douglas, Grasso, Magliano, President Orser, Torpey and Wise voted Yes. The motion carried.

School attorney retainer: The board voted to appoint the district’s recommended law firm as school attorney for the upcoming year and to adopt a retainer specifying hours and rates. Trustees debated whether to solicit alternatives; supporters cited the firm’s institutional familiarity. Roll‑call votes were recorded: Curzio Aye, Douglas Yes, Grasso Aye, Magliano Aye, Orser Aye, Torpey Aye and Wise No. The motion carried.

Other approvals: The consent agenda (including a slate of donations) passed by voice vote. The board approved instructional and non‑instructional personnel requests and read tributes for more than a dozen retirees from across the district. The board also approved joining Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES for cooperative bidding to leverage purchasing power.
