The Washington County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation on April 2 declaring April 2026 National Library Week in Washington County.
Diane Ambrose, administrator of the Washington County Library System, accepted the proclamation and thanked the commissioners for continued support. She highlighted the library network’s services and outreach across the county and neighboring counties, and invited residents to system events this summer.
"We provide over 700,000 items to every resident of Washington County and 2 other counties, Greene and Fayette," Ambrose said, describing digital resources, job assistance and children’s programming that she said make libraries "essential to our thriving communities." She also invited the public to a summer reading celebration set for July 25 at Mago Park.
Commissioner Electra Janice read the proclamation before the board voted to adopt it. Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the proclamation on a roll‑call vote.
Why it matters: County libraries provide free access to information, technology and programming for job seekers, students and families. The proclamation is largely ceremonial but signals county support for library funding and public outreach.
The board’s action was procedural and requires no further county approval. Libraries invited residents to upcoming events and to use county library services; commissioners did not take additional budget action at the meeting.
