A village staff member said residents should file property complaints through the village website or the Access Skokie app so reports go straight to the area inspector.
"The best way for you to get a complaint to us is to go to the village's website or use the Access Skokie app," the staff member said, adding that submitting online "ensures that your complaint is routed directly to the area inspector." The staff member said, "It saves the middleman. You don't have to put a call in."
The staff member described the enforcement process that follows receipt of a complaint. The village assigns the complaint to an inspector, who will visit and assess the area of concern. "If it's a violation, we issue a notice to the property owner to correct the violation and schedule a reinspection," the staff member said.
If the owner does not correct a violation, the staff member said the village may escalate the matter. "If the violation is not corrected, then we would potentially issue a ticket where the owner would be required to appear at an administrative hearing," the staff member said, describing a formal enforcement step beyond notices and reinspections.
The staff member also acknowledged public frustration about response speed and urged viewers to trust the process: "Even though it may seem to you like we're not on top of this and we're not taking care of these concerns, please rest assured that we are. There are a lot of internal processes that happen behind the scenes," they said.
