Governing board reviews relaunch of Torch Academy as ‘Sun City West Citizens Academy’ with three-tier format

The governing board’s Torch committee proposed on April 10 a redesign and rebrand of the Torch Academy to increase participation and better prepare residents for committee or board roles. The committee recommended renaming the program the “Sun City West Citizens Academy” and restructuring it into three levels: Torch 1 (Essentials), a one-day introductory session planned twice in the fall; Torch 2, a conference-style deeper dive with breakout sessions; and Torch 3, an intimate leadership-preparation course for those pursuing committee or board service.

Bob Wilson, representing the Torch committee, told the board the existing seven-week format has been difficult for many residents to commit to and that the restructured tiers are intended to widen access and capture snowbird and year-round residents alike. The committee proposed small participant fees to cover nominal costs, using a mix of staff and volunteers to present sessions. Wilson noted the committee aims to hold Torch 1 sessions in early fall and run Torch 2 in November, with Torch 3 offered the following spring so participants can progress through tiers over time.

Directors generally praised the proposal and made practical suggestions (e.g., weekend or summer offerings to reach year-round residents, clearer outreach to clubs and committee chairs to promote the program). Novello said the board will put the rebrand and the revised program on the April agenda and that final approval could follow once the committee provides advertising and operational details.
