Jen, representing conservation staff, asked the commission to authorize use of the Conservation Trust Fund to hire a seasonal land-management worker for roughly 16–20 weeks (estimated cost about $16,000) and to purchase a Kubota utility vehicle (estimated purchase price about $20,000) to support stewardship of the town’s conservation parcels.
Jen said the fund balance is approximately $202,000 and explained that, while the town is shifting away from relying on the trust for full-time staffing, the trust remains an appropriate source for one-season positions and small equipment to maintain town conservation lands. She told commissioners the Kubota will help access large parcels and perform work more efficiently: "I talked to our former land manager… he would have been able to get 3 times the amount of work done had he had this piece of equipment." The commission discussed trailer availability for moving the vehicle and agreed DPW can lend or arrange a trailer if needed.
Outcome: commissioners voted to approve the expenditures from the Conservation Trust Fund for both the seasonal position and the Kubota. The motion passed on roll call. Staff said they will proceed with hiring and procurement and will phase planting schedules to prioritize fall planting where appropriate.
