Riverside trustees approve resolution backing municipal land‑use authority amid state affordable‑housing debate

The Village of Riverside Board of Trustees on April 16 approved a resolution expressing support for municipal authority to regulate land use, after editing its title to avoid appearing to endorse pending state affordable‑housing legislation.

President Doug Pollock said the state proposal contains both infrastructure funding and provisions that would mandate local zoning changes, including accessory dwelling unit (ADU) provisions tied to lot size; he and other municipal leaders said they support affordable‑housing goals but prefer locally crafted solutions. Trustee Hammond suggested rewording the title so readers would not assume the village supported the state bill in full; the board agreed on revised language—"Resolution of the Village of Riverside in support of municipal authority to regulate land use"—and then moved, seconded and approved the measure by roll call.

Pollock said the signed resolution will be sent to the Illinois Municipal League, the West Central Municipal Conference and the village’s state representatives. No formal legal challenge or action against state proposals was taken; the resolution states the village’s preference for local control and asks regional partners to consider the same stance.
