Legislature approves $232,024 FY2027 computer hardware refresh; IT cites component price spikes

The Alaska Legislative Council on April 15 approved a fiscal‑year 2027 computer hardware refresh totaling $232,024 to be paid from existing capital funds.

Shay Wilson, chief information officer for the Legislative Affairs Agency, told council members the request reflects per‑unit price increases driven by memory and SSD cost increases. "The total cost of the FY 'twenty 7 hardware refresh is $232,024 to be paid out of existing capital funds," Wilson said. He told the council per‑unit memory and SSD price increases were on the order of 50 percent and that the agency reduced the number of units to limit the year‑over‑year increase to about 1.8 percent.

Representative Shrogy asked Wilson to repeat the explanation about the 50 percent cost increase and what the agency did to compensate; Wilson reiterated that the per‑unit cost rose and staff reduced unit quantities to keep the overall cost nearly level year over year.

Chair Hannan removed her objection and directed a roll call vote. The council approved the hardware refresh on a roll call vote, 11 yeas, 0 nays.

The approved request covers replacement of aging laptops and desktops to maintain legislative productivity and avoid downtime from failing equipment. The packet included replacement equipment lists and quantities reviewed by the IT subcommittee; council members did not attach additional conditions to the approval.
