Committee reports SB 281 as amended to expand Baker Economic Development District

Paula Bailey Wilson, representing Senator Barrow and the Baker Economic Development District, introduced Senate Bill 281 and presented Mayor Darnell Waits of Baker, who described the district’s goals to spur business development and workforce training along the Plank Road/Bethany/North Baton Rouge corridor.

"The purpose of the economic development district is to spur growth and business development around the Plank Road, Bethany, and North Baton Rouge corridor…bringing new jobs to the area," Mayor Darnell Waits said, outlining plans for retail, restaurants, a hotel and convention center and cooperative education with local schools.

An attorney (Mr. Benton) explained amendments that place the bill in a form addressing nonresidential property in the district and said amendment number three slightly redefines the district boundaries to pick up additional area. Senator Boudreaux moved to adopt the amendments; the chair noted no objection and the amendments were adopted.

After supporters testified and committee members thanked Mayor Waits for his leadership, Senator Boudreaux moved to report SB 281 as amended. With no objection, the committee reported the bill as amended favorable by voice.
