The Madison Parish Police Jury on May 13 canvassed the returns of the April 27 special election and declared a 4-mill fire millage carried, with 361 votes in favor and 270 votes against, a majority of 91 votes.
The resolution, offered by Mr. Stanley Ogden and seconded by Mr. Johnny Hughes, sets the levy at 4 mills on all property subject to taxation in the parish, estimates about $440,000 in annual revenue, and specifies a 10-year term beginning with tax year 2025 and ending in 2034. The resolution directs that the election results be published and filed as required by law and cites §18:1292 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes for publication of election costs.
The jury voted on the canvass in open session and recorded the yeas as Hicks, Ogden, Wilson, Hughes and Sanders; no nays or absences were recorded. The resolution also requires that a procès verbal of the canvass be forwarded to the Louisiana Secretary of State and that certified copies be filed with the parish clerk of court and retained in the governing authority’s archives.
The vote finalizes the local authorization to levy the special tax for fire protection purposes, including acquiring and maintaining equipment and facilities and purchasing fire trucks. The resolution was declared adopted on May 13, 2024; the parish will publish the results and complete the statutory filings.
