Beardstown City Council met on May 7, 2024, at City Hall and approved routine business including the minutes and consent agenda, authorized a $3,061.50 contribution to the Cass County Overall Economic Development Committee (OEDC), and appointed City Clerk Brian “Petie” Ruch to the Police Pension Board for a two-year term ending April 30, 2026.
The meeting opened at 6:56 p.m. with Mayor Tim Harris and six alderpersons present; Chris Baer and Shawn Taylor were absent. The council recorded there were no public comments.
A motion by Alderperson Eric Harbin, seconded by Dawn Seward, to dispense with the reading of the April 16, 2024 minutes and approve them as published passed unanimously by voice vote. On a separate motion by Alderperson Mary Davis, seconded by Eric Harbin, the council approved the consent agenda by roll call under the Omnibus Vote Designation; the clerk recorded yeas from Lisa Buhlig, Ron Culves, Mary Davis, Eric Harbin, Keith Schramm and Dawn Seward (Baer and Taylor absent).
The council reviewed departmental reports. The Water Superintendent reported 13,799,644 gallons pumped in April and 191,405,488 gallons for the May 1–April 30 year-to-date period. The Police Chief presented April activity including 1,160 calls answered in April and 10,126 year-to-date calls, along with monthly arrest and incident tallies. The Fire Chief reported April totals of 25 city fires and eight rural fires, and year-to-date totals of 222 city fires and 58 rural fires; mutual aid and rescue calls were included in those totals.
On a motion by Dawn Seward, seconded by Mary Davis, the council approved “That a contribution in the amount of $3,061.50 to the Cass County Overall Economic OEDC Development Committee be approved.” The motion passed by roll call vote; the clerk recorded six yeas (Buhlig, Culves, Davis, Harbin, Schramm and Seward) and two absences (Baer, Taylor).
A motion by Mary Davis, seconded by Lisa Buhlig, appointed City Clerk Brian “Petie” Ruch to the Police Pension Board for a two-year term ending April 30, 2026; the motion passed unanimously by voice vote.
There being no further business, the council adjourned at 7:03 p.m. on a motion by Lisa Buhlig, seconded by Dawn Seward.
