House adopts resolution establishing April as Multiple Birth Awareness Month after lawmaker shares personal account

The Michigan House on April 14 adopted House Resolution 276, designating April 2026 as Multiple Birth Awareness Month in Michigan.

Representative Weiss, the sponsor, urged support and described an increase in multiple births nationally and in Michigan, telling colleagues that "live twin deliveries have risen more than 76 percent since 1980." She framed the resolution around public-health concerns: multiples face higher risks of preterm birth and infant mortality, and families of multiples often require greater access to prenatal care, neonatal services, early intervention, and affordable child care.

Weiss spoke from personal experience as the mother of young twins, saying she was fortunate to have access to quality maternal health care that identified and treated preeclampsia. "The care that I was provided likely saved my life and the life of my babies," she said. The resolution encourages parents of multiples to seek resources and highlights organizations such as Multiples of America as local supports.

The House adopted the resolution by voice vote. The measure is ceremonial and encourages public awareness and outreach rather than creating a regulatory requirement.
