Denton ISD trustees unanimously name new high school ‘Mia Price High School’ and CTE center for Jim Alexander

The Denton ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to name High School No. 5 “Mia Price High School” and Career and Technical Education Facility No. 2 the “Jim Alexander Advanced Technology Center.” The motion was moved by Trustee Patty Sosa Sanchez and seconded by a fellow trustee; the board approved the motion without dissent.

Board President Barbara Burns said the board was ‘‘honored to recognize both Mrs. Price and Dr. Alexander’’ for their service to the district and community. Trustee Charles Stafford described the two honorees as ‘‘servant leaders’’ deserving to have their names permanently associated with district facilities.

The decision followed public comment during the board’s open forum. Gerard Hudspeth, who identified himself as speaking in a personal capacity, urged trustees to consider naming the new high school after his parents and said he had ‘‘submitted their name three years ago’’ for the board’s files. The board discussed many community-submitted names before taking the vote and recorded the approval as unanimous.

The naming motion was presented and voted on during open session after the board’s scheduled public comment period. The board did not attach additional conditions or implementation steps in the motion and took no separate action related to site planning during the vote.

The board’s consent agenda and other meeting business continued after the vote. No appeals or later reversals of the naming decision were reported during the meeting.
