The Wayne Board of Education on April 18 honored Wayne Valley swimmer Sarah Rodriguez for winning the NJSIAA state championship in the 100-yard backstroke and breaking the state record with a time of 52.59 seconds. Board members and school administrators also recognized administrative professionals with a special video and public thanks.
Administrators and athletic staff introduced Sarah and noted her school- and county-level records; the board’s athletic director and swim coach joined the recognition. Board members repeatedly commended the school counselors for a counseling showcase that highlighted proactive supports for students, including conflict resolution and college and career planning.
The meeting also included recognition of multiple longtime district employees who are retiring, with readings of biographical statements and expressions of thanks. Those acknowledged included Gail Conway (administrative assistant, athletics), Abraham Moore (transportation, bus driver), Ida (Eda) Ferrante (teacher and Wayne Education Association leader), Robert Yost (industrial arts teacher), Victor Negron (head custodian, AP Turhune), Matisha Shurer (school counselor and author), Mila Stilhanu (paraprofessional), and Tamara Confort (special education teacher).
On operations, the facilities and transportation committee reported that several roofing, window and ADA projects will go out to bid while other projects remain on hold pending funding. Committee members said they are pursuing bids and estimates for an electrical upgrade on Nellis Drive and paving related to a generator project. Transportation leaders said the district operates more than 95 buses and is seeking a bus dispatcher and likely a mechanic as state inspections approach.
Donations from PTOs were recorded: Anthony Wayne Middle School PTO $1,960.05 (7th grade field trip), AP Turhune PTO $200 (buses for 5th grade), and Ryerson PTO $580 (offset kindergarten trip costs). The meeting closed after board member remarks and a motion to adjourn.
